Price comparisons (Case 2)

We’ve compared the costs of booking three holidays both as a package and independently. All quotes were supplied in October 1997

Two people staying at the four star Holiday Which?-recommended Cala d’Or Hotel in Cala d’ Or for two weeks between 3 and 17 July 1998

Booked as a package Thomson Holidays offers this hotel as part of its 1998 Summer Sun brochure. For a standard twin room (with no sea view), we were quoted the brochure price of f805 per person half board, which includes return transfers from Palma Airport. There was a flight supplement of f32 for the daytime flights departing from Gatwick. Thomson insurance cost f37 per person for two weeks - but this is not included in our calculation. ’ TOTAL PRICE = f 1,674

Booked independently The hotel quoted a rate of 8,500 pesetas (ptas) per person per night for bed and breakfast in a standard twin room (with no sea view). The half board supplement was 2,750 ptas per person per night. The exchange rate on the day we enquired was 230.8 ptas to the pound which makes a total of f682.41 per person. Seats on exactly the same Britannia flights cost f211 each (inclusive of all supplements and taxes) through Thomson. But we would have also had to hire a car or pay for bus or taxi transfers to and from the airport TOTAL PRICE = f 1,786.82

VERDICT Using a tour operator saves you nearly f 113 on the basic holiday price, and includes free return transfers to the hotel. But if you wanted a car, you’ d be better off booking It Independently
