Municipal Norms

Local rules are also applicable in the municipalities. They do not normally vary greatly from the general norms, except for the following three areas:

  1. Speed: specific limits may exist. If so, they must be appropriately signalled.

  2. The supervision and control of traffic and the denouncement of offences is, in some cases (large municipal areas), carried out by Local Police Officers.

  3. Most importantly, there may be some measures limiting parking time in certain zones and subjecting it to the payment of a fee, with a payment slip to be shown in a visible place in the vehicle.

These areas of limited parking are duly indicated by vertical signs and by a horizontal blue line.

The infraction of these norms on limited parking (parking without displaying the parking ticket in a visible place in the vehicle, overstaying the permitted time etc.) can lead to a sanction and can also result in the immobilisation of the vehicle until its owner is identified, or the withdrawal of the vehicle to a municipal depot.

Normally, when the police withdraw a vehicle, they signal this circumstance by leaving a sticker with a telephone number on the pavement. If this is not the case, and you find that your vehicle has been withdrawn from where it was parked, address a local police officer or contact the Police Station.

On collecting his vehicle from the municipal depot, the driver has to pay a fee which varies from one municipality to another. He must be given the corresponding receipt of payment.
