Compulsory civil responsibility insurance.

By Royal Decree 607/1999, of 16 April, a new compulsory civil insurance law was passed for all Spanish or foreign pleasure or sports boats sailing in Spanish waters, consisting of the following requirements:

They must be powered by an engine or , if without an engine, must be over 6 metres long.

The insurance must cover against third parties the repair of damages to persons up to a limit of 20 million pesetas per victim, with a limit of 440 million pesetas per accident, and the material damage and economic loss of 16 million pesetas per accident.

Sailing without this compulsory insurance is considered as a serious offence, and can be sanctioned with a fine of up to 50 million pesetas.
