  • The consumer information law (VIG) says that every consumer has to have access to important information about food, producers of products etc. This information is available at consumer advice agencies.

To know where and how to enter a complaint


Available information

  • It is possible to enter complaints about producers or traders in consumer centres. In case a law is violated and the amount in dispute is less than € 5000, the consumer can make his complaint at the district court (Amtsgericht). If however, the amount in dispute is greater than € 5000, a lawyer must be hired and the complaint taken to the county court (Landgericht).

  • People with less money can get legal advice. Places to receive this legal advice (öffentliche Rechtsauskunft) can be found at: www.bmj.bund.de/.

    Large insurance companies or banks have ombudsmen (Ombudsleute), who are specialised persons and generally retired legal experts. They are able to solve conflicts where the amount in dispute is less than € 5000.
